I was able to use the spare time from rained out sporting events and gardening to start a new chicken coop. I am basically building a 4' wide x 8' long box to house the chickens in. The chicks from the spring are really getting big now and I need to move all the chickens to the new coop. I also need to move the 3 small chicks out to a coop too. I hope to finish the coop in the next week and move the 8 over. Then bring out the 3 smaller ones to the original coop until everyone gets acquainted. The 3 chicks have almost all their feathers in and love to perch on the big tub we have them in. It will be great to get them outdoors.
Right now in the garden we have strawberries and lettuce producing. The strawberries are really small. I believe this is because I planted them late. So because of this we are using these all for ourselves. As long as the plants live through the summer I will leave them in the ground. However, if they fail for any reason I will probably plant new ones in the fall. I believe with the warm weather last week that we have reached the end of the flowering season and there will not be many more berries produced after this flush. Part of seasonal eating is enjoying what is being produced right now and then moving on to the next delicious thing. Soon we will have raspberries and blackberries. Then the vegetables will be coming in and things will be busy. It is a great time of year for gardeners and farmers.
