I was able to rake up some pine straw to put around the blueberries and blackberries this weekend with the warmer weather. I was also able to see that all the lettuce and Chinese cabbage are dead. Apparently 3 degrees is the point where they die. I was also able to mow some leaves which I bagged and put in the garden.
The chickens have not ventured out of their coop much. Saturday as I fed them some leftover bread there was what appeared to be a falcon fly over and land in some trees which sent the chickens back in the coop. I have seen some chicks on craigslist that have intrigued me including the Bielefelder chicken. I will probably look into this or something soon.
I am also thinking about gardening opportunities in other people's yards or vacant lots. I have passed a big community garden on Wedgewood Ave several times in the last week. If I knew what I know now our first house in Inglewood and the surrounding rental houses' back yards would have made for a great city garden or even farm. If anyone is interested in loaning out their yard please contact me. I have also started discussions about continuing the Northfield Community Garden and it appears we will be doing it again this year.
